Teaching and Public Speaking
I teach workshops and classes on public engagement, science communication, and audio production. I also give talks and contribute to panel discussions on those topics, as well as on the importance of diversity in STEM.
Science Communication Workshops
I work directly with individuals and small groups to develop their communication skills, and to help shape their story for different audiences. I am particularly interested in working with scientists who are underrepresented in the media and public engagement.
I run a range of workshops on science communication and public engagement for scientists and researchers at all career stages. In 2015, I teamed up with science writer, Claire O'Connell, to create a one-day workshop on communicating research and engaging with the media. We've delivered this at University College Dublin, Trinity College Dublin, and Dublin City University. If you'd like to find out about this or any other workshop, get in touch!
I regularly give talks and take part in panel discussions about science and science communication. I've spoken at Inspirefest, SCI:COM, the SFI Summit, Festival of Curiosity, Bright Club Dublin, Science Gallery Dublin, Dublin Skeptics Society, and the IDEA Annual Conference. I have also hosted events including TEDxDublin and panel discussions including The Science of Discworld with Terry Pratchett at Trinity College Dublin.
In 2020, I will be teaching on a new professional master's degree on public engagement and citizen science at Ca’ Foscari University of Venice, in collaboration with Science Gallery Venice. In 2018, I was a guest lecturer on the Masters in Science Education in Trinity College Dublin and, from 2016-2017, I delivered a series of seminars on science communication at the Trinity Biomedical Sciences Institute.
